After listening to and watching the introduction, what do you think the episode will be about? Explain why.

At around 0:55, the host asked the viewers, what’s a best-before date? Answer the question in your own words without doing any research.

Before that date the food is at its best (it’s fresh). They can’t guarantee the quality.

Name the ways in which the store clerk would tamper with the cakes that weren’t bought after a set amount of time.

Replacing fruit, and then let them stay for another two weeks, as this can lead to cancer.

Avoid any cake, pie or bakery product that isn’t in its original form (cut in half or into smaller pieces).

Not only the bakery department got caught tampering with their products. Meats are also prone to tampering. Name the methods used to make meat look fresher, also mention the products that were tampered with.

The meat is rewrapped, and the best-before-date is changed. They take the brown meat and turn it red.

After the short break, your hear the host talking about ‘funky fondue’, answer the following questions after watching this sub-item.

a. What is meant by funky fondue?

It is a molten cheese fondue, and you can put vegetables in it.

b. Does this sub-item convince you that tampering with foods and their best-before labels is something that also happened in the past, or has it become more common since then? Support your answer with a strong argument as to why you think this.

It has been more common sice then, especially with big labels.

c. What do you think of the fact that the fondue mix – even after the company had gone out of business – could still be found on store shelves? Do you think Lipton is lacking after they said; “I bet you a thousand dollars you couldn’t find another package of the stuff.”

It is no problem, as long as it is not bad for you.

What products were still considered to be edible, even after mould had grown on them. What products weren’t suitable for consumption?

One product that is considered not edible is meat, and one product that is considered edible is bread. (But thet don’t guarantee it).

What is the reason behind changing or tampering with the best-before dates and the products on their own?

They do it beause they can resell the product and they will eventually get the money. To conclude: the only reason is money.

Does David Wilkes look like he’ll stand up against these practices and eventually change the food-safety standards? Why do you think this?

I don’t think he is going to change, because his choice of words did not convince me.
